A small and petite little cafe located beside the food court on the top most floor of City Square mall in JB, Humble Beginnings is famous for their mille crepe cakes. They have an indoor sitting as well as an outdoor area (where I like to sit at) and is a great place to catch a yummy break after the busy shopping in the mall. The place is quiet and less populated, which is nice especially after facing crowds for a long day.
The best seller here is their original french vanilla flavour, followed by their chocolate and cookies and cream. I’ve tried their french vanilla and lemon cream prior to this and really enjoyed them both!
The matcha crepe cakes look really good as well with red bean and cream sandwiched between the layers. Though the green colour looks a little scary to me to be honest but I would like to try it out when I head there next.
On this day, my mum and I decided to go for a hot cappuccino with a raspberry yoghurt crepe cake and apple crumble. The cappuccino was pretty basic, nothing special, but we could not have cake for afternoon tea without a drink to match.
If you are expecting a warm gooey apple crumble, paired with a warm creamy sauce, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. This apple crumble (10.90 RM per slice, 120 RM per cake) is served cold, with a tasty dense crust (similar to that of IKEA cheesecake crust), cheesecake type of middle with small pieces of apple and crumble at the top, finally topped with cinnamon. It’s nothing particularly special so I’d say stick to the crepe cakes though it is decent.
The Raspberry mille crepe (10.90 RM per slice/ 120 RM whole) I really liked. In generally, I love greek yoghurt and enjoy anything that has yoghurt as a base flavour. The raspberry added a tart contrast to the sweet cream and it’s a combination I enjoyed. I would recommend trying it out (right after you try their original french vanilla!). Compared to Lady M in Singapore or other shops that sell crepe cakes, Humble Beginning is really affordable and is not far off in quality. I will admit the the LadyM one is creamier and smoother, but for the price difference, I think you should definitely check this place out if you’re in the area.
